Postponement packaging, or late-stage-customisation, is the supply chain practice of keeping a product in agnostic packaging until the last moment, only making it market specific when demand for the product arises. This prevents over or under estimation of quantities, leading to less waste, and will allow drug firms greater flexibility and efficiency in their supply. This also has the potential to help more complex products, such as biotech drugs with smaller patient populations, enter the market in an efficient way.
In this article in Manufacturing Chemist, Dexter Tjoa, Director Corporate Strategy, explains the benefits of postponement packaging, as well as detailing the challenges it presents. For it to succeed, he argues, organisation and careful planning is required.
